Why a Registered Dietitian?

Just as you wouldn't seek home building advice from someone who had only read about home building in books or had only taken a one day home building training course, you shouldn't trust your nutrition, your food choices or your health to anyone but a licensed professional with extensive education and experience in nutrition and dietetics.

Registered Dietitians are licensed, university educated health professionals with extensive training in human nutrition and food service operations at the university and post graduate level.  Registered Dietitians use evidence-based medicine as the basis for their client recommendations.  They must meet ongoing continuing education requirements and must demonstrate to their licensing body that they are qualified and competent.

Make sure that everyone who gives you nutrition advice has the title RD (Registered Dietitian), or PDt (Professional Dietitian) after their name.  RD and PDt are protected titles in Saskatchewan, just as MD (medical doctor) or RN (registered nurse) are, and choosing a Registered Dietitian for your nutrition advice will help ensure that you are receiving appropriate evidence-based nutrition advice for suitable for your needs.

As a Registered Dietitian, the only item I will sell to you is qualified nutrition advice.

Dietitians Standards of Practice

"Protecting public trust and ensuring the quality of dietetic services is the responsibility of all dietitians. Because it is a privilege, and not a right to practice as a dietitian we are accountable to the public and to each other.

This means that we must:
· practice within professional, legal, and ethical standards; and
· monitor practice according to those standards."
-quote from the Dietitians Standards of Practice, 2000
