Michelle's Biography

Michelle has over 10 years experience as a Registered Dietitian helping people reach their nutrition goals.  She has a Bachelor of Science, Nutrition (with distinction) degree from College of Pharmacy and Nutrition at the University of Saskatchewan and is also a graduate of the Food Services Supervisor program at SIAST Kelsey in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.  She is licensed by the Saskatchewan Dietitians Association and is also a member of the Dietitians of Canada and the Diabetes Educator Section of the Canadian Diabetes Association.

Michelle specializes in diabetes education, customized nutrition presentations, workshops for organizations, groups and businesses, and the development of educational and promotional nutrition resources.

Michelle has gained extensive experience as a dietitian while working and volunteering all across southern Saskatchewan.  While working as a community dietitian in East Central Saskatchewan, she delivered the nutrition education to patients in and out of the hospital, educated hospital and community health staff on nutrition practices, educated the community on diabetes and heart health, and worked with the foodservice staff to meet patient nutrition needs in a financially responsible way.  She has also worked for the File Hills Qu'Appelle Tribal Council as a Health Educator promoting healthy lifestyles to both adults and children on 11 First Nation Reserves, while also offering her support and expertise to the nutrition programs in the schools on and off reserve.

Under the direction and vision of the Public Health Nutritionists Working Group of Saskatchewan Michelle developed the Self Study Manual for Nutrition Coordinators which is a supportive educational and reference tool for people providing nutrition programming in schools other food delivery settings.  The manual includes 14 modules covering a wide range of nutrition issues and an extensive reference and resource section.  It is currently being used as the manual for the Self Study Course for Nutrition Coordinators being offered at the North West Regional College in North Battleford, Saskatchewan.

Michelle also has a varied background in foodservice consulting with experience in menu planning, menu evaluations, nutrient analysis and food safety.  She understands how small foodservice operations work and can help bring a new approach and new business into an operation.  She has worked with school nutrition programs and government run foodservice operations to improve financial and operational status of the business while improving the menu offered to clients.

While counseling individual clients on healthy eating and healthy living, Michelle has seen her clients struggle with making positive changes because of difficulty with changing lifelong habits and the strong urge to fall back into unhealthy eating patterns.  Because of this she has become a licensed Craving Change™ facilitator.  The Craving Change™ program offers a way to break free from emotional eating and problematic eating and move towards a more positive relationship with food.  Craving Change™ has been a rewarding and life changing program for those who want to be successful in moving past their problematic eating and making the kinds of food choices they have only been able to dream of!

Presently Michelle is the Aboriginal Diabetes Initiative Dietitian with the Touchwood Agency Tribal Council in Punnichy, Saskatchewan.  She works in the communities of Day Star, Muskowekwan, Kawacatoose and George Gordon First Nation to help raise awareness of Diabetes and it's impact on the health of First Nations peoples.  While not busy with her business and her family, Michelle currently volunteers with the Canadian Diabetes Association, the Sherwood Estates McCarthy Park Community Association and the Regina Parents of Children with Autism.
